Importing Positions From a CSV

2 min read

CSV import is available today on the organization (university fund) surface only. Members with permission to manage positions can bulk-load holdings into a team portfolio from a spreadsheet. Individual retail accounts do not have CSV import: to bring in your own holdings, link your broker as described in Importing Your Portfolio From a Brokerage.

Step-by-step

  1. Open your organization’s trading page and click Add position.
  2. In the Add Position window, choose the Upload CSV tab.
  3. Click Download template to get positions-template.csv with the correct headers and two sample rows.
  4. Fill in one row per holding and save the file as CSV.
  5. Choose your file and click Import CSV.
  6. Read the result: Ezana reports how many rows were imported and how many were skipped, with the reason for each skipped row.

How it works

Required columns are ticker, shares and avg_cost. Optional columns are name, sector and notes. Header names are matched without regard to capitalization or surrounding spaces. Each file can hold up to 1,000 rows.

Every row is checked on its own. A row is skipped if the ticker is missing or badly formed (letters, digits, dots and hyphens, up to 12 characters), if shares is not a number greater than zero, or if avg_cost is not a number of zero or more. The ticker check is a format check only: it does not confirm the symbol trades on an exchange. Valid rows are imported even when others are skipped.

Nothing is written at all if a required column is missing, the file is empty or cannot be read as CSV, it has more than 1,000 rows, or no row passes validation. Imported rows are added to the team portfolio as new positions; they do not replace or merge with positions already there.

Troubleshooting

  • “Missing required columns”? Start from the downloaded template so the headers match exactly.
  • “Permission required” instead of the form? Adding positions needs the manage_positions permission. Executives and portfolio managers have it; ask one of them to grant it to you.
  • Only the first few errors shown? The window lists eight skipped rows and a count of the rest. Fix those and re-upload only the missing rows to avoid duplicates.

FAQ

Q: Can I import a CSV into my personal portfolio?

A: Not currently. CSV import exists only for organization portfolios. Link a brokerage to import personal holdings.

Q: If I upload the same file twice, will positions double?

A: Yes. Each import adds new rows, so upload a corrected file containing only the rows that were skipped.
